HIT A STRAIGHT GOLF BALL: KEEP FROM LAYING OFF YOUR CLUB

hit a straight golf ballOne way to hit a straight golf ball is to avoid laying off your club on your back swing. It virtually is impossible to hit a straight golf ball if you lay off your club on your back swing because you will need  to come “over the top” during your downswing in order to make contact with the ball.

When you “come over the top” during your down swing you typically will deliver an open club face to your ball at impact on an out-to-in swing path and produce a slice golf shot.

The problem is that many slicers do  not  realize they are laying off their club during their back swing.

There is a simple test to determine whether you are laying off your club during your golf swing. It is a golf method recently discussed in an article by Jim Mclean, one of the top instructors in the U.S.

Here is the part of the article that shares a test to determine whether you are laying off the club during your back swing:

“Procedure: Find a wall and, using an old club, stand with your back to it, your heels about two feet away. Make your normal backswing and try to avoid hitting the wall. If the club strikes the wall on the way back, you are swinging too much around your body. If you strike the wall on the forward swing, it is evidence that you’ve swung excessively from outside to inside the target line on the downswing. Read More http://www.golfdigest.com/golfinstruction/blogs/theinstructionblog/2012/01/weekend-tip-practice-against-a.html#ixzz1kRdw6tJv.”

One way to avoid from laying off the club face during the back swing is to learn how to lock-in a square club face alignment during your set up routine.

Then if you assume a comfortable stance and posture to your ball,  center the sweet spot of your club face directly behind your ball and align your shoulders parallel with your target line, it will be very difficult to lay off your club during your golf swing.

Indeed, once you lock-in a square club face alignment, you correspondingly will lock-in an online swing path of your club face.

If you then keep your head steady and execute a balanced golf swing you will deliver a square club face to your ball at impact on a swing path that matches your target line to hit a straight golf ball.
