HOW TO HIT A STRAIGHT GOLF BALL: KEEPING A STEADY HEAD IS ONE OF THE KEYS

how to hit a straight golf ballWhen learning how to hit a straight golf ball, keeping a steady head during your back swing is one of the main keys.

There is a lot of controversy these days about keeping a steady head when trying to learn how to hit a straight golf ball.

Many instructors think it is counterproductive to keep a steady head during the golf swing

Nonetheless, some of the greatest golfers in the history of the sport thought it to be one of the most important disciplines of all if you wanted to improve your golf game significantly. Jacks Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer quickly come to mind.

A recent golf article also stressed the importance of  keeping a steady head to improve one’s golf swing. Here is a part of the article that shares a unique golf method of making sure your head remains steady during your golf swing.

“An excellent way of achieving the feel of a quiet head is to get some feedback from your shadow. Place a ball on the ground and set up in your normal address with the sun directly behind you so that the shadow of your head is covering the ball. Once you’ve set up with the ball placed in the center of your head, make some practice swings, watching the shadow of your head on the ball. Your goal is to keep your head in the same position. That way you will learn how it feels to keep your head still during the swing. All you have to do to keep your head steady when you play is to just try and recreate that feeling. Using your shadow to determine whether you are moving your head during your golf swing is an excellent drill to improve your golf swing.

What many who stress keeping the head steady during the golf swing do not understand is that, althought the head should remain stable during the back swing, it must move somewhat to counter balance the hip rotation during the down swing.

The necessary movement of the head during the down swing to counter balance the rotation of the hips during the through swing is at the heart of the controversy.

I believe if instructors would emphasize that the head should remain stable only during the back swing and allow it to move naturally to counter balance the rotation of the hips during the through swing there would be less controversy on the subject matter.  There possible could be complete agreement.

So, when learning how to hit a straight golf ball, keep your head steady during your back swing but allow it to move naturally to counter balance your hip rotation during your through swing.
